Check engine light indicates anything from a failed sensor to serious engine malfunction!
Common problems:
Mass Air Flow Sensor
Function: Monitors the mass of air entering engine to balance the amount of fuel needed for engine demand.
Symptoms of failure include:
-Poor fuel mileage (as vehicle does not mix the air and fuel properly when the MAF is malfunctioning)
-Poor performance due to weak acceleration, stalling & rough idle
-Vehicle may not start
Coil On Plug
Function: Provides the electrical current for the plug to spark, which ignites fuel.
Symptoms of failure include:
-No-start, hard start, long crank time
-Misfire, lack of power
-Poor fuel economy
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
Function: "Gate" that allows exhaust gas back into engine resulting in a cooler, more complete burn of the fuel
Symptoms of failure include:
-Poor engine performance
-Failed emissions test
-Engine surging
Crankshaft/Camshaft Position Sensor
Function: Informs coil when to send spark to fire engine
Symptoms of failure include:
-No-start, hard start
-Long crank time, misfire
-Premature engine bearing wear
Oxygen Sensor
Function: Measures oxygen to notify computer to increase or reduce fuel supplied to engine
Symptoms of failure include:
-Reduced gas mileage and engine performance, can cause damage to the catalytic converter
-Failed emissions test
